callinan crowned king of the box

Newcastle’s Ryan Callinan put on an aerial show to take out the annual King of the Box competition at Box Beach.

DESPITE a small field the inaugural surfing event at the annual King of the Box produced some amazing surfing.

The left-hand break at Box Beach, Port Stephens provided the perfect setting for a spectacular air show led by Merwether board-riders Ryan Callinan, Jesse Adam, Jackson Baker and Travis Lynch.

Callinan took out the open title winning himself a ticket to Hawaii after producing a highlights reel that any current tour surfer would be proud of.

The goofy-footer had just returned home after finishing equal-ninth at the $250,000 ASP Men’s Prime event on the Portuguese Azores islands and he was out to put on a show.

Runner-up Lynch has wound back the clock in 2013 having a stellar year.

The local surf-guard would be well out in front of the Merewether surfboard club title after some stand-out performances.

Jesse Adam made it a Merewether trifecta finishing third.

Illawarra’s Nicholas Squiers was a stand-out in his early heats but struggle to land any big scores in the final.

Northern Beaches youngster Holly Wawn took out the women’s final from Merewether’s Sarah Pehlan and Ruby Bortolus with Maddi Poole finishing fourth.

The Legends final was a closely fought affair and was eventually taken out by Tim Spencer.

Simon Hassen finished a close second with Tez McKenna and Chilli filling out the minor placings.

Jackson Baker won himself a trip to Bali courtesy of a big win in the junior division.

Illawarra’s Harry Steele put in a fine performance finishing second with Jake Constantinidis and Todd Edmund taking out the third and fourth spots respectively.
