callinan through to round of 96

Merewether’s Ryan Callinan has progress through to the round of 96 at the Vans World Cup of Surfing at Sunset Beach, Hawaii.
The goofy-footed Callinan negotiated a tough, low-scoring opening round finishing second behind local young gun Kalani David.
With an increase of swell expected for the end of the week contest organisers have put the event on hold until Friday.
Callinan will take on fellow Australian, and former Surfest winner, Dion Atkinson and Hawaiian pair Pancho Sullivan and Hank Gaskell.
A win or second-placing will see him through to the seeded rounds where the world’s top-ranked surfers, the likes of Kelly Slater, Mick Fanning, Taj Burrow and John John Florence, will be waiting.
