Newcastle’s Jake Sylvester will be up against it in tonight’s third round man-on-man heat against young WCT surfer Gabriel Medina.
Not only does Medina have world tour experience, he will be surfing in front of his home crowd.

Sylvester progressed through to the third round of the World Pro Junior Championships in Brazil  via a round 1 win over Oney Anwar and Reo Inaba.

In tricky, solid six-foot waves at Florianopolis Beach, Sylvester posted a 6.03 and a 3.4 to win through.
It was a low-scoring affair and with only minutes remaining in his heat, Sylvester sat in third position but he charged home to post his six point ride when it counted.
It proved to be the highest scoring wave of the three-man heat and was the difference between advancing and facing a round two elimination heat.
Jake will surf again on Thursday.
