COOLANGATTA/QLD (1st July, 2014): Junior surfing in Australia is riding a new wave of support with today’s announcement of the Subway® Summer Surf Series.Organised by Surfing Australia, the 13-event series will be held around Australia this summer showcasing the country’s best male and female surfers in the under 16 and 18 age divisions.

The new summer series was created to fill a competition void which exists at a crucial point in the development of Australia’s leading junior surfers.  It represents an important link in the ‘pathway to the podium’ developed by Surfing Australia, with surfers now able to progress from the VEGEMITE SurfGroms program, onto the Wahu Surfer Groms Comps, into the Subway® Summer Surf Series, followed by the Australian Boardriders Battle.

Gina Kahler, Regional Marketing Director, Subway® Australia and New Zealand (Subway) said, “Subway is proud to support the future of Australian junior surfing by providing this important stepping stone for Australia’s up-and-coming surfers.”

“Subway supports healthy, active lifestyles which is what surfing is all about,” said Kahler. “We hope this series will inspire young Australians to be healthy and active this summer, to get out and about and also make better food choices.”

Ambassadors for the Subway® Summer Surf Series are ASP World Tour competitor and 2012 World Champion Joel Parkinson and leading ASP World Tour female competitor Laura Enever.

“I’m delighted to be an ambassador for the Subway® Summer Surf Series,” said Parkinson.

“All the success I’ve had at an elite level has come from surfing junior events when I was younger, and it’s great to see Subway and Surfing Australia partnering up to create a strong platform for junior surfing in Australia. It’ll be great to watch some future world champs in action this summer.”

Enever is equally excited to be partnering with Subway and the Subway® Summer Surf Series.

“I remember how excited I felt as a grom surfing in junior events, so its rad to be a part of the Subway® Summer Surf Series, which encourages and inspires young surfers in Australia to continue to develop their surfing and also to get the most out of life by being healthy and active which includes eating well,” said Enever.

Proudly supported by Surfing Australia and Billabong, the Subway® Summer Surf Series will help young Australian’s continue to develop their passion for surfing, whether it be professionally or recreationally and carry on to enjoy a lifetime of surfing.

Surfing Australia CEO Andrew Stark said, “We are absolutely thrilled to announce this monumental new partnership with iconic Subway® brand.”

“The new Subway® Summer Surf Series is the most extensive national U18 & U16 junior surfing programme Surfing Australia has ever delivered and will act as a critical sport development and talent ID programme for our sports future stars.”

“There is currently significant demand for junior surfing events of this age demographic Australia-wide and the new Subway® Summer Surf Series programme provides the perfect programme for aspiring junior talent and further strengthens our sport development pathway.”

“The Subway® brand fits well with Surfing Australia’s purpose which is to create a healthier and happier Australia through experiencing the joy of surfing for life.”

Events will be held at: QLD: Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast; NSW: Yamba, Newcastle, Dee Why, Cronulla, Kiama; VIC: Torquay, Phillip Island; WA: Trigg Point, Margaret River; SA: Victor Harbor; TAS: Clifton Beach. Division include: U/18 boys, U/18 girls, U/16 boys and U/16 girls.

Each event is expected to attract as many as 100 surfers vying for the top honour.

The male and female winners from the U/18 divisions of each event in the series will be invited to attend a three-day Subway® Surf Camp at the Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centre at Casuarina. The camp, conducted by Australia’s leading surf coaches, aims to provide participants with the assistance and training they need to make the transition from surfer to professional athlete.
