Newy to host Aussie Boardriders Battle final

Surfing Australia today announced Newcastle will host the nudie Australian Boardriders Battle National Final on February 17th – 19th, 2017.

Adding to an already massive weekend will be the annual Australian Surfing Awards Incorporating the Hall of Fame, which will also be staged in Newcastle on the same weekend (Saturday 18th).

The National Final of the nudie Australian Boardriders Battle to be held at Newcastle Main Beach will again offer a World Tour surfing event-like experience for the clubs and the fans. Live broadcast to big screens on the beach and major infrastructure along with great sponsor activations will ensure a fantastic celebration of club surfing culture is brought to life. The event will also be broadcast live on Fox Sports nationally over the weekend.

Four-time world champion and Merewether Surfboard Club legend Mark Richards spoke of the great impact the nudie Australian Boardriders B attle Series National Final would have on the city and what boardriders clubs meant to surfing in Australia.

“I think boardriders clubs are integral to the development of Australian surfing,” said Richards.

“The best male and female surfers have come from boardriding clubs. I first joined the Merewether club in Newcastle when I was 12 years old and am still a member. For me it really contributed to my competitive success because there were always good surfers in the club and they always made me strive to improve my surfing and then they gave me incredible support and kept me well grounded.

“All around the country boardriding clubs are directly responsible for nurturing our competitive talent that has gone on to have successful international careers and I think they would all say without boardriding clubs they wouldn’t have had the success they have achieved.

“This event will showcase Newcastle to the rest of the country. I think we are incredibly spoiled here. We live in an amazing spot with beautiful beaches and I think the more people that see that on TV or through the internet will only increase tourism here.

”The timing for it is perfect with Surfest following straight after. I hope we get two great weeks of waves. We will have the best Australian surfers here for the ABB and then the some of the best men and women from around the world competing at Surfest the following week. It’s really exciting.”

Current World Tour surfer and Merewether Surfboard Club member Ryan Callinan was rapt to hear about the event coming to his home.

“I travel a lot, competing all over the world, so anytime I get to be home and sleep in my own bed is a bonus,” Callinan said.

“To have the two events back-to-back is great. I think it will bring alot more people to town too, from all over Australia and those internationals doing the QS as well. I think it will really up the level of surfing.

“It will be a great event to watch and a great event to be apart of.

Callinan has been a member of the Merewether Surfboard Club from the age of five and it has played a huge part in his life and his families.

The goofy footer jumps at any chance he gets to compete under the blue and black flag and is excited about representing his club in his home city.

“I love the club, its a big part of my life. Everything they have done for me over the course of my life has been amazing. Just being in that competitive environment has been really good and shaped me into the surfer I am today. So to come back and compete with my mates, to be part of a team, and support them the way they have supported me is great.”

“To be a part of that team and compete at an event like this for them is really good. We have such a rich history and to be part of that history is amazing.

“We have finished third twice out of three years now, but I think we will be much more relaxed here on our home turf. To get a win here, the celebration would be pretty special.”

The nudie Australian Boardriders Battle Series will involve more than 60 of Australia’s best boardriders clubs in eight state qualifying rounds, which commence with the NSW Central round at North Narrabeen tomorrow and culminate in a national final in Newcastle in February for a bolstered 24 clubs.

The nudie Australian Boardriders Battle has official sanctioning by the World Surf League (WSL), which allows Australian WSL Championship Tour surfers (men and women) the opportunity to represent their local boardriders club at respective state qualifying events and the National Final.

“We’re very proud to partner with Surfing Australia and this iconic Australian club series,” said nudie Foods Chief Brand Governess, Carlie Platts.

“At nudie, we love to create good, not only with our products but in the community too – and that’s exactly what the nudie Australian Boardriders Battle is about.”

The prestigious National Final event will also include the nudie trials on Friday 17th February 2017, which will be the final qualifying opportunity for clubs in the Newcastle region for a Wildcard position for the National Final.

“February’s going to be a massive month for surfing in Newcastle,” said Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes.

“We are delighted to host the nudie Australian Boardriders Battle National Final at Newcastle Beach before our annual Surfest contest at Merewether.

Thanks to the improved amenity council has provided at Newcastle Beach through our ambitious Bathers Way Project between Nobbys and Merewether, spectators and competitors will enjoy a wider shared pathway, better viewing areas and seating, new plantings, bins and bike racks that will all help make for a great and very relaxed event.”

There’s $160,000 cash and prizes up for grabs for clubs across the National Series including $24,000 prize money split between eight State events and $85,500 prize money across the Newcastle National Final with the winning boardriders taking home a huge $20,000 and an overseas trip for 6 surfers from the winning club thanks to World Surfaris valued at $30,000. To top things off, there’s an additional $20,000 in prizes across the series.

NSW Minister for Trade, Tourism and Major Events and Minister for Sport, Stuart Ayres said that Newcastle was the perfect location for the nudie Australian Boardriders Battle National Final.

“Newcastle has some of Australia’s best surf beaches, and I can think of no better location to hold the National Final of the nudie Australian Boardriders Battle. The event, which is proudly supported by the NSW Government, through its tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW, forms part of a packed calendar of NSW surfing events.

During the year our State will also host the Australian Open of Surfing at Manly, Surfest at Newcastle, the WSL Junior Championships at Kiama and the NSW Pro Surf Series along our State’s magnificent coastline. It promises to be an incredible summer of surfing in NSW.”

The purpose of the nudie Australian Boardriders Battle program is to build the profile and capacity of community boardriders clu bs Australia-wide. Over the next three years, more than $450,000 will be invested into grassroots clubs through the partnership.

“We are extremely excited to bring two of our biggest events to Newcastle such an iconic surf town and with a rich history of passionate club surfing,” said Surfing Australia CEO Andrew Stark.

“It is sure to be a fantastic weekend to crown Australia’s champion club through the nudie Australian Boardriders Battle and to celebrate our history and culture with the Australian Surfing Awards.”
