17 Jun international surfing day
If you’re a surfer and you know it, lend a hand!
On June 21st beach goers and surf enthusiasts from around the world will come together to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of Surfrider Foundations’ International Surfing Day (ISD).
The non-profit organization, which is dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of our world’s oceans, waves and beaches through a powerful activist network, encourages everyone to share the soul of surfing and love for our coastal environments.
Founded in 2005 by Surfrider Foundation and Surfing Magazine, International Surfing Day has gone from just a handful of local observances to more than 200 events in 30 countries worldwide. Its a worldwide celebration of the sport of surfing, providing the perfect excuse to paddle out with friends, enjoy the day and give back, no matter where you live.
This year, surfers and beach-goers Australia-wide are encouraged to get involved to celebrate 10 years of surfing stoke and to take a moment to look at how our individual actions can impact on the health and longevity of our ocean playground.
Surfrider Foundation engages with surfers and coastal enthusiasts to challenge the way people think about the coastal environments they enjoy. Surfrider connects people’s coastal passions, whether that be surfing, swimming, snorkelling or walking along the beach, to the very environment which makes these activities possible, engraining a sense of personal responsibility for the protection of our ocean waves and beaches so they remain for future generations to enjoy.
“We want surfers to stand up and to realise the connection between protecting our environment and the sport they enjoy. If they don’t care enough to take action about the waves and beaches they surf and love who do they expect will? Surfers should have a powerful say in the future of our coastline (Brendan Donohoe, Chairman, Surfrider Foundation Australia).
To be a part of International Surfing Day Surfrider is asking surfers simply to have a party-(BIG OR SMALL), dinner, lunch, BBQ, and share the “Stoke”. Ask those attending for a donation and then hit the DONATE button at surfrider.org.au.
All funds raised will support Surfrider Foundation which has a proud 22 year history in Australia protecting the waves beaches and oceans we all love and enjoy.
In the words of Kelly Slater “I think when a surfer becomes a surfer, it’s almost like an obligation to be an environmentalist at the same time.”
(Kelly Slater – International Surfing Day Ambassador).
