08 Dec callinan smokes reynolds in round 1
Merewether’s Ryan Callinan has stormed into the second round at the Billabong Pipe Masters on Hawaii’s North Shore.
The young goofy-footer surfed a fantastic heat up against world tour surfer Dane Reynolds, posting scores of 9.33 and 8.43.
Callinan had American commentators frothing, asking ‘who is this kid’ as the 21-year-old Aussie busted out of his second backdoor barrel to put Reynolds in comboland.
Understandably Callinan was a little shell-shocked after his heat.
‘This was my first CT heat, and to surf against a guy like Dane, and take him out, it is a bit overwhelming – I’m a bit speechless.’ Callinan said.
Callinan struggled to get a wave during a 40-minute free surf earlier in the morning, and the experienced gained during his opening heat will be invaluable for his upcoming battles.
‘I had a free surf this morning, got one wave and got dropped in on,’
‘Then I sat out the back for 40 minutes, got another wave and got closed out on, so I didn’t get many waves.” he said.
‘I try to avoid the big swell because of the crowds, but it was awesome to be out there with only three guys, picking the eyes out of it.’
Ryan now takes on Hawaiian local Sebastian Zietz in round two.
