Small one to two foot waves greeted competitors for the opening day of the Orica Team Challenge at Stockton Beach today.
The wind-swept North-East swell provided contestable waves in the opening heats of round one, but the increase in wind speed and lowering tide made scoring difficult after lunch.
17 teams contested the opening round, North Avalon were a no-show.
Heat one was taken out by defending champions Frenchmans with Merewether Black and Northside Great White finishing second and third.
Saltwater were too strong for North Narra in the second heat and Merewether Blue trounced North Shelly and Northside Mako in heat three.
Heat four was won by North Narrabeen Black, with Catho second and Bar Reef third.
Heat five had North Shelley Black on top, Redhead finishing second and the Merewether junior team in third.
The final heat of round one was a close affair for first and second.
The Bay Area getting the better of North Narrabeen White and Saltwater Bravo finished third.
The round-robin competition will recommence tomorrow morning at 8am.
