52nd annual mattara surf classic

The 52st Annual Mattara Surf Classic will be held in Newcastle on the 19th and 20th of October 2013. The Mattara Surf Classic is an iconic event that has been held continuously for the past 52 years.

The Mattara as the contest has become known, is unique among Australia’s surfing competitions. It has gone on to become the longest consecutively run surfing contest in Australia’s competitive surfing history, along with the annual Bells Beach Surf Classic in Victoria.

Since Jim Newburn’s inaugural win in 1962, champions such as Mark Richards, Michael Peterson, Nat Young and Damien Hardman have all graced the Mattara Surf Classic’s winner’s dais, adding to the prestige that the Mattara already carries for its 51 years of running.

Mark Richards, the most successful male Australian surfer in International surfing’s history and a past Mattara winner regards the event highly.

“The Mattara Classic is one of the longest running events in Australia with a rich history of who’s who of Australian surfers having competed in or won the event. Winning the 1974 Mattara Classic, beating Mark Warren, Terry Fitzgerald, Peter Townend, Michael Peterson and Wayne Rabbit Bartholomew was my ticket to the entry to the Smirnoff Pro-am in 1974, the most prestigious events of the era,” said Richards.

Last year’s 51st winner Merewether local Ryan Callinan shared what it means to be a Mattara Champion.

“The Mattara Surf Classic is such a special event. I have grown up around this event watching many great surfers compete and win it. I was really stoked to win the event last year and I am very proud that I’m now part of the Newcastle Mattara legacy .”

The Mattara Surf Classic is focused on the enhancement of local grass roots of surfing in Newcastle. This year is no different with organisers expecting a good turnout of local competitors eager to win the prestigious event and the cash and prizes on offer.

The entries for the Open event will be limited with a new Pro Junior Division being created for U/21’s that will allow the growing number of Pro Junior Surfers in Newcastle and beyond to showcase their skills. Organisers have also decided to run a Girls 18 Years & Under division alongside the already successful Boys 16 Years & Under division in what should ensure an action packed event.

The 52st Annual Mattara Surf Classic is proudly supported by Shotters Lawyers, Jirsch Sutherland, NHS Plasterboard & Timber, Sanbah Surf, Surfing Newcastle and Surfing NSW.
